Sometimes we all fall into a rut when it comes to food. Do you ever feel like you make the same dinners week in and week out? I sure do. And we all know how kids (especially small ones) can go on seemingly endless food jags. Will they ever get sick of chicken nuggets? Probably not.
We’ve found that this tendency has carried over into our trail snacking. We love our LARABARS and Nature Valley bars, don’t get me wrong! But lately I think we need to shake things up a bit. My plan is to use this Spring and Summer to experiment with some recipes I found on Pinterest.

This is a great project for Trail Families for a few reasons
Being in the kitchen together
Being in the kitchen together is great for any family. Even before we started Trail Family, we loved cooking together as a couple and as a family. Finding a recipe, following a plan, and enjoying the end product is a great learning experience for kids. It teaches them important skills like following direction, sticking with a project until it is finished, and basic kitchen safety. They also get to experience enjoying the fruits of their labor and the sense of accomplishment.
Trying new things
You get to try new things all together as a family. Shared experiences are what help us grow closer together. This is one of the main reasons that we are a Trail Family in the first place. Not only will you have the time in the kitchen preparing your new snacks, you also get the shared experience of trying them out on the trail. Maybe you can even vote on your favorites within your family. Add the recipes that get the most votes to your family cookbook.

Cultivating the Trail Family lifestyle
When you start this project with your family, you are showing your children that being a Trail Family can include many areas of interest. Your child who loves to cook is going to be stoked about the activity. Do you have a math and data lover? Recording and calculating all the results will be right up his alley. Cultivating the Trail Family lifestyle really does include something for everyone. No family member need be left out even if they are not the “outdoorsy” type.
Here are some links that I have gathered from Pinterest that we intend to try for our Spring and Summer hiking seasons. Follow us on Instagram at trailfamilylife to see our results! Tell us about your favorite trail snacks in the comments.
