Sounds like a question from a cheesy dating show, right? But I thought it would be fun and generate some conversation to tell you what my idea of the perfect day out on the trail would be.
Picture this…

A late September day where we find the autumn foliage in all its red, orange, and golden glory. It’s sunny and about 75 degrees. We have packed a picnic lunch and head down to the D&H trailhead.
Everyone has a good attitude about our day out and carry their own stuff. We are excited to discover new things, try a few activities from our Never Get Bored Outdoors book, and take lots of wonderful photos.
Everyone’s shoes and socks fit perfectly so no one gets even the hint of a blister. This may seem like a small detail, but I’ve learned that noticing and being thankful for small things are some of the building blocks of true joy in the journey.
We hop out of the car and head south on the D&H Rail Trail. There are lovely naturescapes and bridges that we love to see. We stop at one of the picnic tables along the trail and have lunch as a family. There are few things my children love more than a picnic. I love that they are learning to appreciate the simple things in life.

After lunch we all walk back. This whole time we are having great conversations, taking pictures, and making memories that we will all cherish for a lifetime.
Sorry to get a little gushy there at the end. This is my perfect day on the trail. What’s yours? Would it be a different season? Would you be biking instead of walking? Let me know in the comments. I’d love to know what your ideal day on the trail looks like.
