I was sitting at my kitchen table last week doing my Friday ritual of paying bills and balancing the checkbook, when my friend Katie sends a text to ask if I’m up for going snowshoeing the next day. Since I have been making a concerted effort to enjoy winter, I jumped at the chance. As a recovering cold weather curmudgeon, this was the perfect opportunity to have some frosty fun and check off an item from my Winter Bucket List. Katie and her husband Fred had gone on a snowshoe hike a few weeks prior and enjoyed it immensely.

We love living in a trail town that has one of the best trails in our state. In fact, the Department of Conservation of Natural Resources just named the D&H Rail Trail the 2021 PA Trail of the Year! They deserve the accolades as the trail council has worked tirelessly for years to improve the trail surface and trail heads. We love living at the Northern Gateway to the Anthracite Region. We enjoy our fantastic trail and rich history.
Scheduled group activities are an excellent way to new people out on the trail and to get current trail enthusiasts to try something new. Another great aspect of trail life is that it is easy to social distance even in a group activity. On the second Saturday of each month, D&H Rail Trail hosts Trail Yoga. Since we have had some lovely snowfall this season, this outing was snowshoeing and yoga. The Rail Trail office even provided the snowshoes and poles.
The instructor Tiffany does an amazing job of incorporating the yoga poses. She showed us poses and movements that aided in our using the snowshoes more easily without straining our backs and hips. Stopping in a beautiful snow covered clearing for some more stretches and breaths was marvelous.

As I look back over just the first few weeks of this new year, I’m already counting my incredible blessings. Being out with a friend enjoying creation in the fresh winter air without having to travel a long distance for the privilege. Who could ask for more on a cold Saturday morning?
